The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies
It only seemed right for this recipe to be the first on my blog. Although simple, these cookies are worth gathering for! Their crisp exterior cracks open to reveal a chewy, gooey center, needless to say, I’ve deemed them cookie perfection. The story behind these cookies is just as sweet. In 2023, my husband, Ryder, and I moved to Arizona for a short six months for him to attend Basic Officer Leadership Course (aka BOLC—the Army loves their acronyms). We were blessed to be given a home on base together while many of his peers were assigned to live in the hotel unaccompanied.
One day, I decided to make a big batch of cookies for Ryder to take to class, knowing everyone could use a bit of home cooking. Little did I know, I’d soon become an icon for the cohort complete with memes, endless praises, and constant requests. At first, I thought everyone simply appreciated the gesture and was just hyping me up saying these were the best cookies they’ve ever had, but finally I accepted that maybe I was onto something here with this recipe. Soon, soldiers were asking what kind of magic I was working to make them, and even wondering if the elevation had something to do with it since we lived at the base of the mountains. I was flattered by all the attention and couldn’t help but laugh because, truthfully, these are about as basic as my baking gets.
When our time at Fort Huachuca came to an end, I made about seven dozen cookies for the class graduation, and it was bittersweet to see soldiers leaving to serve in different corners of the world with little to-go baggies of my cookies. That day, Ryder’s First Sergeant called me into his office. Thinking something was awry, I hesitantly knocked on the door, and he insisted that he wouldn’t sign Ryder’s out-processing paperwork until I passed along the recipe for my chocolate chip cookies. I grabbed a notebook piece of paper and jotted down the recipe from memory. Evidently, the legend of these cookies lived on because about a year later, after moving to Germany, we met some new friends who had previously been stationed at Fort Huachuca. They told us, “We were told we have to try your cookies.” Apparently, word had traveled across an ocean, and I guess that’s when I knew these cookies were something special.
NOTES: Store cookies in an airtight container for 2-3 days.
